Am I the only one that tries to practice Stephen Covey's 5th Habit in communicating with others?
"Seek first to understand, then to be understood."
Though, I'm not always successful, it's one of my guiding principles, and I'm always deeply surprised by how many people assume they understand, instead of trying to understand...
The 5th Habit is a way of avoiding cynicism, believing the best about people, not making your perspective the only one that counts, and being open to being wrong about another's actions or communication. I'm not suggesting that I'm never cynical, never make assumptions, or never get things wrong, but as someone who is trying to participate with God's dreams for the world, I'm committed to trying. So, if you don't already practice this, help a brother out, it may not lead to agreement, but at least we might better understand each other, and in doing so, battle our own self-centeredness and legitimize each others' humanity.
I'm fairly sure that pleases God.
